JD Williams is the main-stream value arm for the N Brown Group mail-order home shopping. The warehousing and distribution operations are based near Manchester.
JD Williams catalogues offer a huge selection of clothing and other products for all ages and sizes. All their clothes are designed to provide the best fit at the best value, they specialise in the area of larger size womenswear with a range of channels to market including catalogues, internet ordering and tele-ordering This business processes up to 130,000 items per day rising to 180,000 per day during peak times.
As part of their growth strategy planning JD Williams searched the market for a suitable partner to help identify operational improvements from the receipt of orders to pick/pack and despatch, to fulful customer orders.
Click-On Logistics worked with their specialist partners Pierau Planung based in Hamburg in undertaking an end to end review of the business operations. Several areas for improvement were identified including the introduction of new technology, the stream-lining of process flows and the re-organisation of product categories within the storage and pick operations.
Space saving improvements were achieved together with volume capability in the auto sortation areas of the pick-pack operations. The results enabled JD Williams to plan ahead with confidence for future peak periods where additional capacity would be required.
Further development and capacity enhancement are to be considered together with building developments.
